The Best Looks From Our Favorite Holiday Films

The weather is getting colder, and as we spend more time at home, watching holiday films can bring some cheer...and some fabulous holiday outfit inspiration. While we wouldn’t begrudge you for indulging in “ugly sweater” season this year, we think you’ll find these holiday looks festive and chic.

Whether you prefer the classics, the Hallmark small town love story, or the American girl meets a prince from a small European country and falls in love (sound familiar?), most of them have the same theme: The magic and joy of Christmas.

Here, we take a look at six iconic silver screen looks that have us eager to step up our fashion game this holiday season.

The Holiday

This funny film about two women who trade homes for a winter holiday, starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black, will warm your heart. Diaz’s character traveled in style in 2006, and her style still holds up in 2020--not to mention, it’s actually weather-appropriate if you plan to brave the elements. Complete with a cashmere turtleneck, shearling coat, big sunglasses, a white leather tote, and brown leather weekender duffel, you can arrive in style wherever you’re headed this season.

Meet Me in St. Louis

Watch and listen to the incomparable Judy Garland debut the now-classic Christmas tune “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” In the scene of the Christmas Ball, she wears an elegant red gown with a quintessentially 1950s sweetheart neckline. The rich garnet color and form-fitting waist are absolutely timeless, and the puff-sleeves are right on-trend for 2020.

We think this elegant number is a good mix of classic and modern. Whether you wear it to a holiday ball, or just dress up at home, it is sure to lift the Christmas spirit.

Love Actually

Love Actually follows the story lines of several characters, but Keira Knightley’s all-white bridal ensemble is the only draw we need. Ethereal with long, sheer layers and feather accents, she looks perfectly divine. Underneath: A torso-baring top and skinny trousers. Don’t hold us responsible if someone mistakes you for a Christmas angel.

The Holidate

Starring: Emma Roberts

If ever there were a chic version of the Grinch, it’s Emma Roberts in her role as Sloane Benson, a young woman whose relationship status (single) is the subject of scrutiny at virtually every family gathering. Sloane’s entire wardrobe is fitting to her character: a bit dark, occasionally a mess, but an attractive one nonetheless. Our favorite: a retro-ish floral patchwork cardigan paired with sheer stockings and a black miniskirt. Despite the predominantly black color palette, it remains fun and sexy.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This funny story about the Griswold’s family holiday is full of unexpected guests, and misfortunate (but hilarious) events. Starring Chevy Chase as Clark, the father, and Beverly D'Angelo as Ellen, the mother, the movie is filled with late ‘80’s fashions. However, there is something timeless about Ellen’s green taffeta skirt that we think will be an elegant addition to your holiday wardrobe.

This is the third installment of the sweet, funny tale of an American journalist who falls in love with a Prince from a small European country (sound familiar?). Our favorite outfit, and perhaps the most practical one for the 2020 holiday season: A comfy silk pajama set. Since we'll be continuing to spend a lot of time at home, investing in luxurious pajamas feels like an appropriate choice.

The tasteful sophistication and versatility of this navy velvet set is why we think they are definitely worth having for your holiday wardrobe!
